Introductory Letter

Purpose

The beginning. First assignment given out in the class was the introductory letter. My experience with this assignment was very different from other classes because it was an actual letter and required many components. Usually, when you do an introductory assignment it’s however you want to compose it, but this time I had to construct it as a letter and had to answer multiple questions.

Dear Ms. Davidow,

Hello, I am writing to you because I want to give you a better understanding of who I am and what you should expect from me as a student this semester. This is my freshman year in CCNY as I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science. Before I get into why I chose Computer Science, I’ll start off with a little introduction about myself.

I was born on August 4th, 2001 in Flushing Hospital, not too far from where I live now. My whole life I lived in Corona, Queens and till this day I still live in the same house. Both of my parents are immigrants who traveled from Pakistan to America in 1992 to live a better life. They wanted to give my siblings and me more opportunities than they had back home resulting in my parents permanently settling in New York. My parents had three children, two sons, and one daughter. Being the youngest son, I’ve learned a lot of life lessons observing my siblings grow up, which persuaded me to attend college.

I’ve encountered several experiences in my life that shaped the person I am today and altered the life I predicted myself to live. One experience that stood out to me the most was playing football. Football taught me how to be a leader, be patient, and pain. My football career came to end after getting into a bad hit which made me tear my ACL and Laboral ligament in my shoulder. I underwent surgery for both these body parts and what I learned from this is once one door closes many more open up. After this incident, I started paying attention to school and started thinking about what I wanted to do in life. I got into doing robotics and working with computers in High School as I took classes in both areas. In my High School, Information Technology High School, I took a robotics class and a computer IC3 class. I loved both and they were my favorite classes in High School, and it played a big role of me getting into the engineering field.

All of my achievements come from sports, other than that I personally don’t feel I outstand in any other area. The most important academic achievement I value was my computer IC3 verification test in high school. Many students weren’t able to pass the test, so when I found out I passed I was overwhelmed with excitement. This is when I knew I wanted to major in something relating to engineering. The ability to build something from scratch both physically and virtually filled the void of football. Moreover, I am dedicated to achieving my goals throughout college and my life, starting with graduating with a computer science degree.

The engineering world is huge with a variety of opportunities ranging from electrical engineering to computer science. Our world is so advanced and modified due to engineering, and the world wouldn’t be where it is today without the engineering field. When I think of myself as an engineer, I worry about the creativity one has to have. I want to be able to create something new and different, but in a world with different advancements every day, I feel that I will lack a creative mind. Regardless of my major being computer science, I want to learn about the different fields in engineering like mechanical engineering. Overall, I am excited to embark on this new journey in the engineering world and hopefully innovate the world with my computer science skills.

Yours Very Truly,

Abdullah Nadeem
